What "research use only" means for peptides in the UK

What research use only (RUO) means, why research peptides aren't medicines, food or cosmetics, and why sellers can't give advice about using them on people.

Sold for the laboratory

Research use only (RUO) means a product is sold for laboratory research, such as in-vitro (test-tube and cell culture) work, and not for use on people or animals. RUO peptides are not medicines, food, supplements or cosmetics, and haven't been assessed or licensed as any of those.

Why the line matters

In the UK, whether something is regulated as a medicine depends on how it's presented and what it's for, not just what's in it. A product presented as treating or preventing disease, or as something to take to change how the body works, can be treated as a medicine, and selling unlicensed medicines is an offence.

That's why a responsible RUO seller describes products only in research terms, labels every vial "research use only", and asks buyers to confirm they're buying for research.

Why we don't give dosing or usage advice

We can explain what a peptide is, how it's structured, where the published research comes from and how to store it in the lab. We can't advise on using any product on people or animals, and won't answer questions about doses or effects. A seller that does is treating the product as a medicine.

What buyers confirm

At checkout, buyers confirm they are 18 or over and are buying for laboratory research. Products should be handled by suitably qualified people, following their laboratory's own protocols and safety data.

This guide is general information, not legal advice.

All products are sold strictly for in-vitro laboratory research. They are not medicines, food or cosmetics, and are not for human or veterinary use. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
